So You Want To Buy A Cocker Spaniel Puppy?

Commitment
Getting a puppy is a big commitment. And as your dog is likely to live up to 15 years, it's a commitment that shouldn't be taken lightly.

Cost
Cocker Spaniel puppies don't come cheap!
Aside from the initial price you must be sure that you can afford the essential extras. For example, your puppy will need a bed, a crate, a couple of warm blankets, a collar and lead...just to mention a few!
Then there's ongoing expenses, such as food, vet bills, pet insurance, boarding kennels and the cost of a grooming parlour, should you decide to use one.

Time
You also need to be certain that you have enough time to spare.
Cocker Spaniels need exercising every day for at least one hour.

Things you should know before buying a Cocker Spaniel puppy

Go to the American Spaniel Club (ASC) web page and  check the list of Breeders. The listed breeders are members in good standing of the American Spaniel Club but in no circumstance does the Club guarantee the services of said members. These names are furnished to you for your information only. It's usually a red flag if the breeder has registered the puppies with a different organization, or has not registered them at all. You must inquire and satisfy yourself as to the background, quality, health and condition of any dogs being offered for sale.  It is advisable that you visit the breeder before purchasing a puppy.

Choosing a Cocker

It is advisable that you visit the breeder before purchasing a puppy; this allows you to see how the puppy interacts with littermates and his mother, to see the conditions under which the puppy has been raised and to see health certifications on the parents of the puppy.

You should be prepared for the breeder to provide a contract that will state your responsibilities as well as those of the breeder. Typically, a contract will discuss any guarantees provided and spay-neuter requirements, if any. You should also discuss with the breeder how to care for and feed your puppy when you take him home.
